Remember that time Mozilla used our song “Multiply” as part of their presentation at the Google I/O Conference? *snort of derision* Kid’s stuff, for babies!

At 8pm on the evening of November 1, the Seattle Interactive Conference – a mecca for socially awkward extroverts far and wide, will be pitting the biggest music nerds in Seatown against one another in the first ever Battle of the Geek Bands at the venerable Showbox SODO. Through an arcane selection process known only to this shadowy organization of geeks, Half Acre Day, along with four other local bands whose members all have toilet paper trailing from the soles of their shoes, have been selected as the aforementioned battle-nerds.

Chosen by such local luminaries as big-butt-liker/non-liar Sir Mix-a-Lot and Chris Ballew and Jason Finn of the Presidents of the United States of America, the winner of this competition will receive a trophy (we envision something in lucite), bragging rights and an as-yet-unspecified Cash Prize (we envision something in the three-figure range… yeah, that’s right… that’s THREE).

Then, at the stroke of 11 on 11/1/11, the Presidents themselves take the stage for their special brand of rollicking, good-time rock ‘n’ roll! It’s all enough to make you wanna cancel your Wizards Club meeting.

What a weekend!

Saturday we had the rare privilege of playing a private party in Allyn, WA, in a beautiful community unknown as Treasure Island, right on Puget Sound, at a surprise celebration for the birthday of the wife of Matt K.’s dentist and friend Don Mayer. By the way, if you’re in the PS area and in the market for a good teeth-and-gums man, look him up – he’s the best there is and a top-notch bloke to boot. No, we don’t typically use this blog as a forum plugging healthcare providers, but in this case, we’ll make a well-deserved exception.

The party was a blast and the partygoers knew what they were doing, taking the band to task and getting us to play songs on-the-fly we’d never tackled before in a two-straight-hour set. They danced. They sang along. They twisted and shouted and sat in with us. They freaking limboed. Beautiful people, all. Can’t wait to do it again.

Not ones to sit on our collective hands, we headed out the next morning for an all-day video shoot with the makers of upcoming sci fi classic Project London. The song, “The Pythagoras Switch,” was written by Half Acre Day exclusively for the movie, which is set in a dystopian, alternate-present-day Seattle.

We hit some great locations and got what promises to be some killer footage under the direction of filmmakers Mike McCoy and Javier Cáceres – who recently made a name for himself with this viral lip dub video, which garnered 1.7 million YouTube views, national headlines, a stint on the network talk-show circuit and a score of imitators, including the cast of The Office. Not bad!

These guys were super-pro and yet full the kind of piss-n-vinegar that only hungry young moviemakers possess. It was a joy to work with them and we can’t wait to get a look at the outcome, which will eventually show up here.

Now onto the next thing: a little travelin’. We’re leaving this evening for a trio of shows down in the beautiful state Oregon. We’re gonna be blogging all about it, or at least as much as the state of wi-fi will allow, just so’s you can keep an eye on us. Stay tuned! This oughtta be good.

Last Thursday we played at the Triple Door in Seattle at the Musicquarium for the first time. Next Saturday, July 16th, we’re gonna do it again.

See, Matt Cory – HAD’s bassist/conscience/spirit guide, has been spending the last several years immersed in the creation of a stunning body of visual artwork, and in the past several months has been displaying the results around town, kicking off every opening with an intimate acoustic performance by Half Acre Day. Sneaky/clever, no?

This month, his collection is hanging at the Triple Door, a classier-than-normal bar and music/art venue smack in the middle of downtown. It’s a shockingly fun place to play (and see) a show, and our joy in doing so must have been evident, as we were invited back to play this weekend, an opportunity we were happy to seize.

You really ought to join us. Come have a few drinks and stand agape at the beauty of Mr. Cory’s work while the strains on a newly reenergized (and acoustically reformatted) HAD massage your ear-holes.

We got the run of the place for three full hours, so expect the unexpected.

CHIRP Radio in Chicago gives HAD a nod for best singles series of 2010. CHIRP says:

“This indie pop band boasts five songwriters who each bring a distinctive style to the table, while contributing to one another’s work in a way that allows Half Acre Day’s overall sound to gel. Their challenge for the year was to write, record and release a new song each month (on an unsigned band’s budget, with day jobs), and the result is an album’s worth of confident, nuanced, catchy rock. Get one, or get them all.”

Happy Holidays, friends! What a year it’s been…

First off, we’re finally nearing the end of our year-long cycle of songs. Song 11 of the 12, “Wrists,” has just been released today. Give it a listen on our website and get ready to have your booty shook.

Half Acre Day

Listen to this. The song is called “Itch,” made up by us in HAD under the direction of songwriter/drummer Dusty Hayes.

Incidentally, this marks Dusty’s songwriting debut as a member of the band. All we can say is forget what they say about letting drummers write songs (i.e., don’t). This is a damn fine and catchy tune that we’re proud to call our own.
